MTV Weighs Fate of DJ AM's Drug Addiction Series
In the wake of Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein’s potentially drug-related death on Friday, MTV has yet to decide what to do with his unaired reality series Gone Too Far, which features Goldstein counseling young drug addicts. In a rough cut of the show obtained by Entertainment Weekly, Goldstein talks to a young user who spends $200 a day on heroin and speaks about his own well-documented history of drug addiction. Complicating matters further, The NY Post now says that Goldstein planned to check into rehab hours before his death, making the show’s harrowing examples of honesty seem like tragic foreshadowing.
Among various instances of candor, the show features Goldstein illustrating the point that drugs are easy to find by walking into a bodega and buying a crack pipe and “ghetto grape soda” for less than $3. Upon grabbing the pipe, Goldstein confesses to the camera, “My heart’s still racing a little bit because I was just holding a crack pipe, which I haven’t held in a long time.”
The choice of whether to air the show is much more difficult than whether to air, say, the rest of Megan Wants a Millionaire, which VH1 canceled after contestant Ryan Jenkins fled murder charges. Though Goldstein’s death is a tragedy, EW explains that his “history with drugs makes watching him counsel others about kicking the habit seem oddly noble and yet disturbing at the same time.” Tough call, indeed.
