Which Film is Set to Become the 3rd-Highest Grossing Movie Ever Overseas?

Pop Quiz! Sometime this week, Titanic and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King will be joined by a new film that’s supplanted all comers to become the third-highest grossing movie ever overseas. Think you can guess it?

Here’s a hint: It’s not whatever you just guessed.

Here’s hint two: The movie didn’t even crack the domestic top five this year. In fact, by the end of December, it might not even remain in the top ten.

Give up?

It’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs! The animated sequel, which made $194 million in the U.S. this summer, has grossed a stunning $657.5 million overseas. For comparison’s sake, The Dark Knight pulled in $468.6 million in those markets. The first Star Wars prequel? $493.2 million. LOTR: ROTK and Titanic look fairly unimpeachable from here (with foreign hauls of $742.1 million and $1.242 billion) but still, who could have seen this coming? Next time you find yourself in at the mercy of locals in a foreign land, just reenact the irrepressible Scrat trying to get that nut. Instant diplomacy!
