Bollywood Courts Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks For Biopic to End All Biopics
· Helen Mirren, Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones are among the Oscarrific stars reportedly in talks to join Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story, a long-gestating, Bollywood-produced biopic of the former Indian prime minister who was assassinated in 1984. Mirren would reprise her signature role as Queen Elizabeth II, while Hanks and Jones would take on the roles of — deep breath — Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. Respectively. Emily Watson and Albert Finney may also drop in as Margaret Thatcher and Peter Ustinov, the latter of whom was awaiting an audience with Gandhi when she was killed. “Queen of Bollywood” Madhuri Dixit is attached to the title role, having narrowly edged out this year’s ambitious awards-season lock Sandra Bullock. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard makes their own Indian deal, the new My Fair Lady picks up a director and more Hollywood Ink after the jump.
· Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment has become the 10th Hollywood production outlet to make a first-look deal with Indian financiers Reliance Big Entertainment. One can only take this to mean that Howard’s recent, casually reported meeting with Relativity Media power broker Ryan Kavanaugh didn’t go quite as well as the director had hoped. [Variety]
· The My Fair Lady remake that Keira Knightley has been eyeing seemingly forever may finally have a director: Shakespeare in Love helmer John Madden, who inherits the top gear of the rumor mill from previous candidates Danny Boyle, Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Daldry. [Variety]
· Mindy Kaling will join her fellow Office co-writer Brent Forrester to develop The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, about a woman whose bad luck with men shifts radically one day when she’s pursued by the “hottest guy ever.” Or at least the “hottest guy ever” who’ll deign to work on a modestly budgeted film co-produced by John Malkovich, which I presume disqualifies reigning Sexiest Man Alive Johnny Depp. Alternatives? · Warner Bros. nabbed A-list writer Richard LaGravanese to shove its next big vessel, the supernatural five-part teen love story Beautiful Creatures, into franchise waters. The object: To replace the outgoing Harry Potter series at the studio. Sorry, Percy Jackson — you were close. Variety]
