Offensive Lunches
Posted to the Twitter feed of Jimmy Fallon bandleader and Movieline party D.J. ?uestlove was this snapshot (click for larger) of a Black History Month-themed lunch served today in NBC’s 30 Rock commissary. Shortly thereafter, an NBC rep tweeted this: “The sign in the NBCU cafeteria has been removed. We apologize for anyone who was offended by it.” Upper-management is now discussing the best way to proceed with the latest P.R. disaster to befall the beleaguered network, including the option of building a 10 p.m. show around the menu called The Racist Soul Food Variety Hour. “The sign in the NBCU cafeteria has been removed. We apologize for anyone who was offended by it.”
apologize for those offended by it?
How about apologizing for allowing it to be posted AND apologizing TO everyone it offends? As if it's uncertain whether a person could be offended.
Unbelievable.

I am from the south and eat all the foods on that menu. I don't know what blacks in other parts of the country like to eat. Down here, some of our best restaurants are owned and run by blacks who really know how to cook collard greens, any type of beans, fried chicken, and top it off with a slice of sweet juicy watermelon. It's not JUST a black thing, it is a southern thing. If you are screaming racism at this menu, you are being disrespectful of a wonderful culture. Down here, we have always been the brunt of jokes. Luckily, I have learned to laugh at those stereotypes, but demeaning our diet at racist irks me. IT IS NOT RACIST!

"All I wanted to do was make a meal that everyone would enjoy -- and that I eat myself. Questlove, who I serve every day and who enjoys my food, requested the neck bone [cooked in] the black-eyed peas and fried chicken, then got off the line, saying, 'This is racist.' The next thing you know, people were taking pictures of the sign and asking all the other black people in the cafeteria if this was racist. They said that it wasn't.
A disappointed Calhoun, who has worked at NBC for eight years, said she's been begging for years to make special entrees in honor of Black History Month, and got her wish last year. The plan was to have one special meal every Thursday during February -- although she said she's nervous about next week. Asked if she understood why some people might find her menu concept offensive, Calhoun said, "I don't understand it at all. It's what I eat."
So racist!
