Trailer: Sacha Baron Cohen's Dictator May Have the Bomb

What is it with Hollywood trailers this week? Men in Black 3 looked like more like a mass grave than a summer confection, Rock of Ages drowned in music to grocery-shop to, and now the first look at Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator boldly takes on that most subversive and risky of subjects: Muslim despots of the Middle East. You know -- the decadent self-parodies being overthrown, dragged out into the street and executed because they are so incredibly relevant in the 21st century! Oh, and Megan Fox. And the Kardashians. Sigh. Click through for your pick of low-hanging fruit.

Also: Is this Ben Kingsley's Norbit? Enh, don't answer that.

Um, it's a musical focusing on Pop music from the 80's?
Seems to me that featuring music in a musical trailer might not be so out of the norm.

  • That's not the point. _Rock of Ages_ -- first the show, now the movie -- has successfully taken what little edge there was off the music that our parents bristled at 25-30 years ago, all in an attempt to sell it back to them. It's slathered in false nostalgia and stuffed with safe, inoffensive actors (I mean, even Russell Brand is sanitized here) as an inducement to buy, buy, buy. Which is fine! That's business. But it's music to grocery-shop to.

Given how (MPAA) boundary-pushing Cohen can be, it's pretty hard to tell if this will be funny at all. It looks pretty stupid, to be honest, but surely it will be better than Bruno.

So you're saying that because you're not a part of that generation then any movie aimed toward an older audience who might appreciate it isn't worthy?
Anyone that age is well-aware of marketing and as grown-ups they can make their own decisions. It's not like saying a movie's been made just to sell toys to kids. That, I'd tend to agree with.

I usually like Cohen but this looks terrible.

Wasn't Ben Kingsley’s Norbit The Love Guru?

  • Nerd says:

You know it was a bad week for trailers when GI Joe 2 actually looks good compared to the ones you mentioned.
I can't believe I just typed GI Joe 2 looks good.
